Is battle royale still a relevant genre today? Its popularity may be waning a bit on PCs and consoles with only a few titles that have managed to continue to grab the attention of gamers. But on mobile? This genre is still blooming with popularity so far showing no signs of waning. Square Enix doesn’t seem to want to miss the opportunity to enter this market and make a profit from it. Their solution? Of course, take advantage of the hype surrounding the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake the other day.
Being one of the names that was detected registered as a trademark some time ago, Square Enix finally officially introduced Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier which is intended for the mobile market. Told 30 years before the Final Fantasy VII event where Shinra was experimenting to give birth to the first Soldier, this game came as a battle royale game! Final Fantasy elements flow well not only through the damage system, but also through the Magic and Summon systems that are maintained in it.
Final Fantasy: The First Soldier itself is scheduled to be released in 2021, without a definite release date, for Android and iOS-based mobile devices.
Meanwhile, there is other news from Hironobu Sakaguchi, the figure who is often known as the “Father of Final Fantasy” may no longer be interested in releasing more console games since the Xbox 360 era in the past, but that doesn’t mean Hironobu Sakaguchi is no longer working in the gaming industry. He continues to collaborate with his own studio – Mistwalker to release more JRPG games for the mobile market, including his latest enchanting project – Fantasian. Now through two of the newest trailers, he finally shares more details about what he will offer later.
The two trailers are intended to provide a clearer picture of the story and gameplay side. In terms of gameplay, Fantasian looks unique through the fusion of 3D game characters and world backdrops taken from high definition photos of at least 150 hand-crafted dioramas. A system called “Dimengeon Battle” was also introduced, where you can pile up all the enemies you encounter along the way to be collected and eliminated simultaneously, in the name of effectiveness and efficiency.
Accompanied by an OST which was also formulated by a famous legend – Nobuo Uematsu, the side of the story will focus on the balance between Chaos and Order. You will play a character named Leo who wakes up in a mysterious land with no clear memories. Together with the many memories he managed to recover, Leo uncovers more mysteries about the strange infection that continues to haunt him.
Fantasy itself is planned to be released for Apple Arcade, for an uncertain date. There is no information yet whether this game will be released on other platforms or not.
